Manipur protests: CM calls for calm amid protests in Kuki-majority areas
Following protests in Kuki-majority districts over the participation of three Kuki-Zo-Hmar MLAs in the newly formed Manipur government, Y. Khemchand Singh, the new Chief Minister, appealed for calm and urged citizens to adhere to constitutional law. Protests included rallies and a shutdown in Churachandpur district, where effigies of the three legislators were burned. The protests stemmed from a January 13th resolution by the Kuki Zo Council that stipulated participation in government formation only if there was written assurance for a separate administration. This follows the outbreak of ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki communities in May 2023, leading to President's Rule being imposed in February 2023.
