Union Budget 2026: Substantial increase in livestock, fisheries outlay

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced a series of schemes in the Union Budget to strengthen the fisheries and animal husbandry sectors. The budget proposes integrated development of 500 reservoirs and Amrit Sarovars, as well as support for the fisheries value chain through market linkages with start-ups and women-led groups. The Union Fisheries Ministry highlighted the potential of inland fisheries development, while the Union Animal Husbandry Ministry received an increased allocation to focus on productivity, animal health, and infrastructure improvements. The budget also includes a credit-linked capital subsidy scheme for veterinary colleges and hospitals.
