Budget 2026: Mahatma Gandhi Gram Swaraj Initiative announced to boost Khadi production
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced the ‘Mahatma Gandhi Gram Swaraj Initiative’ in the Union Budget 2026-27 to strengthen khadi and handicrafts. The initiative aims to streamline production and manufacturing of khadi clothes, benefiting weavers and youth. This announcement comes on the heels of India's observance of Mahatma Gandhi's death anniversary and follows a record turnover for the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) in 2025. The Sixteenth Finance Commission report was also tabled in Parliament by Sitharaman before presenting the budget.
