Budget 2026 : Government to tax buybacks as capital gains: Nirmala Sitharaman
Nirmala Sitharaman, India's Finance Minister, announced in her ninth Budget speech that buyback proceeds for all shareholders will be taxed as capital gains. This change aims to address improper use of buybacks by promoters and benefit minority shareholders. Sitharaman also proposed an additional buyback tax for promoters, increasing the effective tax rate to 22% for corporations and 30% for non-corporations. This move marks the first time a Sunday presentation has been held for the Union Budget in India.
