Politicisation of Kogilu demolition along communal lines shifts focus from homelessness, say activists

Activists working with the homeless and slum residents in Bengaluru are criticizing the politicization of the demolition of homes in Kogilu Layout, arguing that it has diverted attention from the core issue of homelessness. A. Narasimha Murthy, convenor of Slum Janandolana, Karnataka, stated that the focus on communal lines is hindering efforts to address the welfare and rights of residents who lost their houses. He also pointed out the government's delay in allotting flats promised after the demolition. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has been accused of using the issue to target minorities, while a city-based advocate filed a complaint against Leader of Opposition R. Ashok with the Karnataka State Minorities Commission for making derogatory remarks about the residents.
