Civic polls: high drama as BJP workers lock candidate inside his house in Nagpur
Maharashtra witnessed a tense final day for candidate withdrawals ahead of the January 15 civic polls. Devendra Fadnavis, the Chief Minister and BJP leader, urged rebel candidates to withdraw their nominations. Manoj Gharat of the MNS withdrew his candidacy, while Mahesh Patil was declared the winner in Kalyan-Dombivli after a BJP candidate won unopposed. Atul Londhe, a Congress leader, accused the ruling coalition and the Election Commission of "candidate theft". The total number of withdrawn nomination forms reached 453, with 1,700 candidates vying for positions in Mumbai's municipal corporations.
