Don’t need treaty with Dhaka to push back illegal immigrants: Himanta

Himanta Biswa Sarma, Assam Chief Minister, announced a new policy framework to intensify the pushback of "illegal immigrants" in the state. He stated that his government would not wait for a repatriation treaty with Bangladesh and plans to expel 10,000 to 15,000 foreigners annually over the next five years. The Chief Minister attributed the drive to the revitalization of the Immigrants’ (Expulsion from Assam) Act, 1950, which allows for swift action against suspected foreigners. Sarma also highlighted the state's economic progress, citing a high growth rate and investments in major infrastructure projects. He expressed commitment to ensuring justice for cultural icon Zubeen Garg's family and condemned the recent killing of Tripura student Anjel Chakma.
