Forest officials kill three poachers; opposition demands judicial probe, compensation
Extrajudicial killings by forest department raise serious concerns about abuse of power.
On August 15, Forest Department personnel killed three suspected poachers and injured another in Hanur taluk of Chamarajanagar district, Karnataka. Opposition leaders including R. Ashok, BJP's V. Sunil Kumar, Araga Jnanendra, B.Y. Vijayendra, and JD(S)'s Suresh Babu demanded a judicial probe and accused the government of murder. They sought compensation for families and questioned the circumstances of the firing. Minister Ramalinga Reddy ordered an inquiry but defended the action as self-defense against poachers.
