On July 29, 2001, M. Karunanidhi, former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK president, was arrested at midnight from his Chennai house by police who forcibly entered. A month later, on August 12, the DMK general council organized a rally condemning the arrest and police actions. The rally started at Little Mount in Saidapet, proceeded via Cathedral Road to Kamaraj Salai, and ended at Marina beach where Karunanidhi was to speak.
