On July 29, 2001, the DMK general council passed a resolution to organize a rally on August 12 after M Karunanidhi, former Chief Minister and DMK president, was arrested at midnight by police who forcibly entered his house in Chennai. The rally started at Little Mount, proceeded via Cathedral Road to Kamaraj Salai, and ended at Marina beach where Karunanidhi addressed a meeting.
