CBI Chargesheet Names 11 in Plot to Kill CM's Assistant Chandranath Rath
Alleged political murder with possible links to a rival party raises concerns about political violence.
On August 6, 2026, the Central Bureau of Investigation filed a chargesheet against 11 accused in the murder of West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari’s personal assistant, Chandranath Rath. Two brothers, Sagar Sonkar and Sahib Sonkar, were arrested on August 1 for their alleged role in the conspiracy. The CBI is investigating links to a rival political party after call records showed connections with a local office. Sagar, who had previously worked with both Rath and a rival party before joining the BJP, allegedly ordered Rath's murder and hired assassins from Uttar Pradesh. Rath was killed on May 6 by bike-borne gunmen in Madhyamgram, Kolkata. The CBI took over the case on May 12 amid claims of political connections among the accused.
