Suspended ADGP M.R. Ajith Kumar Battles CAT for Promotion, Denies Bias

M.R. Ajith Kumar, suspended ADGP, filed a petition with the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) arguing his suspension was unjust and aimed at preventing him from being considered for DGP. He alleged the Chief Secretary's order lacked jurisdiction and was issued to negate his promotion chances seven days before consideration. The CAT refused a stay on the suspension but posted the case for August 20, 2026. Ajith Kumar, represented by Girija Gopal, denied interfering with an investigation and claimed the Special Investigation Team (SIT) report was biased against him. He asserted that any delay or denial of promotion would cause significant harm as he is due to retire in 2028.
