Teesta tunnel collapse claims 25 lives, rescue teams recover all bodies after 72 hours
All 25 bodies have been recovered from the NHPC Teesta Stage VI Hydropower Project tunnel in Sikkim's Namchi district after it collapsed following a suspected methane gas explosion shortly after 1 pm on Monday. Rescue teams conducted continuous search operations for 72 hours to retrieve the bodies. The Sikkim government, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and NHPC announced ex gratia payments ranging from Rs 2 lakh to Rs 5 lakh for next of kin of the deceased, and up to Rs 50,000 for injured persons.
