Methane blast traps 25, kills 20 in Sikkim hydropower project
A postmortem report indicates that asphyxiation and burn injuries caused the deaths of 20 workers after a methane gas explosion in Sikkim's Namchi district on Monday. The blast occurred at the NHPC Teesta Stage VI Hydropower Project tunnel, trapping 25 workers inside. Rescue efforts resumed with the NDRF and a West Bengal team pumping water from the tunnel. Compensation of Rs 5 lakh was announced for families of deceased workers by various officials including Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
