Floods from Nagaland cloudburst hit Assam, affecting 8 lakh people and killing 30

On July 22, 2026, Pijush Hazarika, Assam's Parliamentary Affairs Minister, reported that floods in Sivasagar, Charaideo, and Jorhat districts had affected over 8 lakh people and claimed at least 30 lives since mid-June. The disaster was triggered by a cloudburst in Nagaland’s Mon district on July 19, causing landslides and massive water inflow into Assam. Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Chief Minister, toured affected areas and noted that more than 872 villages across 16 districts were hit, with floodwaters affecting crops over 24,210 hectares. The India Meteorological Department forecasted heavy rains in Guwahati and other districts, warning of aggravated flooding and landslides.
