Adhikari Releases Justice Susanta Chatterjee Report on 1993 Police Firing
Unimplemented report on police firing deaths raises concerns about justice delayed.
Suvendu Adhikari, West Bengal Chief Minister, on July 20, 2026, released the Justice Susanta Chatterjee commission report investigating the 1993 police firing that killed 13 Youth Congress supporters. The report recommended ₹25 lakh compensation for each family of those killed and ₹5 lakh for injured persons but was not implemented by former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's government, which received it in 2014. Families only got ₹2 lakh and ₹15,000 respectively. The commission found the firing unnecessary and unjustified. Adhikari accused Banerjee of neglecting martyrs' families to protect her political interests.
