Karnataka High Court Halts Investigation into Student's Allegedly Objectionable Post

On Monday, the Karnataka High Court stayed the investigation into two criminal cases against law student Kiran Aradhya over an allegedly objectionable social media post uploaded on July 17. The FIR was filed on July 18 under charges related to statements causing public mischief and provocation for rioting after complaints were made. Justice M Nagaprasanna ruled that the post did not indicate any religious or group hatred, deeming further investigation inappropriate. Advocate Tejasvi Surya argued against prosecution, while Special Public Prosecutor B N Jagadeesha contended the case was necessary due to a charged atmosphere following Lavanya Gowda’s murder on July 16. The court issued notice to the state government and scheduled further hearing for August 7.
