NC suspends LAHDC-K leader Akhoon for six years over refusal to step down

On July 18, 2026, National Conference (NC) removed Ladakh party leader Dr. Mohammad Jaffer Akhoon from his position as Chief Executive Councillor of the LAHDC-K after he refused to step down as per a deal with ally Congress, which contests elections in coalition. NC general secretary Haji Ali Mohammad Sagar suspended Mr. Akhoon for six years, citing anti-party activities and indiscipline. The NC-Congress pre-poll agreement stipulated alternating five-year terms, but Mr. Akhoon's refusal prompted Congress to seek a no confidence motion. Ladakh MP Hanifa Jan met Lieutenant Governor V.K. Saxena to ensure adherence to rules for the floor test.
