Doctors suspend services as IMA demands action on hospital violence
Politician-led violence against healthcare workers is a serious threat to public health.
Following the violent assault on doctors, nurses, and healthcare workers at Shastrinagar Municipal Hospital in Dombivli by Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde faction) corporator Ramesh Mhatre and supporters on July 18, 2026, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) of Maharashtra announced a 24-hour statewide suspension of routine medical services starting July 20. The IMA urged strict government action against those involved without political interference and amendments to the Maharashtra Medicare Act to prevent such violence. Emergency services will continue as usual during the protest.
