West Bengal forms high-level panel to examine draft Uniform Civil Code

The West Bengal government formed a high-level committee headed by former Supreme Court judge Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai to examine a draft Uniform Civil Code (UCC) on July 2. The panel, including various experts and officials, will review the bill covering marriage, divorce, succession, and adoption before any further steps are taken. This initiative follows Article 44 of the Constitution and aims to standardize civil laws across communities. Since 2014, three states have adopted UCC, with West Bengal set to become the fourth. The move was part of the BJP's electoral promises in the 2026 assembly polls.
