Assault on medical staff by a corporator is a serious abuse of power.
A 26-year-old resident medical officer (RMO) at the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation’s (KDMC) Shastrinagar Hospital was assaulted by a group of men, including Shiv Sena corporator Ramesh Mhatre, who allegedly demanded a bed for a pregnant woman in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). The RMO and other medical staff were physically assaulted and threatened. The doctor reported feeling unsafe and fearing for his life after the incident. He resigned from his position along with four other staff members, citing lack of security and respect. Sadhana Karande, the pregnant woman's mother, stated that she was desperate to find a bed for her daughter in the NICU due to the hospital’s inability to accommodate her. She claimed that Mhatre intervened after they were told no bed was available and helped secure a bed at another hospital where the delivery took place.
