SC stays conviction of former Maharashtra Minister Kokate
Supreme Court staying conviction for a 1995 crime raises concerns about justice.
The Supreme Court stayed the conviction of NCP leader Manikrao Kokate in a 1995 cheating and forgery case. The court, while expressing a tentative view that there was a "fundamental error" in the conviction, directed the stay to prevent Kokate from being disqualified as an MLA. Senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi argued that Kokate had no criminal history and was a five-time MLA, while senior advocate Maninder Singh argued that the false declarations did not constitute forgery. The court will hear the case in detail after re-opening.
