Bill To Check Thugs In Bengal Assembly On Monday, Allows Preventive Detention

The West Bengal government will table a new bill aimed at curbing organized anti-social activities. The National Security Act-like legislation, the West Bengal Public Safety and Control of Anti-Social Activities Bill, 2026, allows for preventive detention up to one year for individuals deemed habitual offenders, syndicate leaders, financiers, or history sheeters. The bill empowers authorities to detain individuals based on their actions causing public fear, danger, or disturbance, including illegal mining and wildlife offenses. An advisory board comprising former judges will review detention cases within three weeks.
