SIR completes one year: Nearly six crore names deleted so far
The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, which has led to the deletion of nearly six crore voters, has completed one year. The exercise, initiated in Bihar last year and expanded to 19 states and union territories, aims to ensure only eligible citizens are on the voter list. The Supreme Court upheld the constitutional validity of the Election Commission of India's (ECI) move to carry out SIR. As a result, over five crore voters have been removed from the rolls across various states. The final rolls for 12 states and union territories were released in late 2023 and the third phase of SIR involving 36.73 crore voters is ongoing.
