Maharashtra Minister Manikrao Kokate’s portfolios removed after court upholds his conviction in housing scam case
A minister convicted of fraud remains in office until forced to resign.
Governor of Maharashtra Acharya Devvrat accepted the recommendation from Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to remove all portfolios from Manikrao Kokate, a Maharashtra minister and NCP leader, following his conviction for forgery and cheating in a housing scheme case. The court upheld the conviction and issued an arrest warrant after Mr. Kokate failed to appear in court. Mr. Kokate's lawyers argue that the lower courts erred by considering his income in 1989 instead of 1994, when eligibility was determined, and that he did not intentionally deceive the government. Opposition parties have criticized the Mahayuti Government for shielding Mr. Kokate. The NCP leader is currently hospitalized due to chest pain and has requested time to surrender.
