Politicial decision must on cut-off for mid-term polls under the simultaneous election system: Joint Parliamentary Committee chairman

P.P. Choudhary, chairman of the Joint Parliamentary Committee on ‘One Nation, One Election’, stated that the decision regarding the definition of "remainder of the term" for Lok Sabha or State Assemblies before an election will be a political one, requiring consultation with political parties. He suggested potential solutions such as amendments to anti-defection legislation and President's Rule application, while acknowledging existing mechanisms for fractured mandates. Choudhary also highlighted that simultaneous elections were previously conducted in India between 1952 and 1967, emphasizing voter vigilance and the historical precedent of different governments being elected during such periods.
