‘Remainder of the term’ after fall of governments under ‘One Nation, One Election’ will be decided in consultation with parties: JPC Chairman

P.P. Choudhary, Chairman of the Joint Parliamentary Committee on ‘One Nation, One Election’, stated that a decision regarding the definition of the 'remainder of the term' for Lok Sabha or State Assemblies before an election will be a political one, requiring consultation with political parties. He suggested various mechanisms to address fractured mandates and simultaneous elections, including amendments to anti-defection legislation, President’s Rule application, and potentially electing Chief Ministers by Assembly votes. He acknowledged that while some parties have differing opinions on the matter, ultimately it is a public policy in national interest.
