India-Trinidad archival pact to help diaspora trace ancestral roots: Jaishankar

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar highlighted the importance of preserving the legacy of the Girmitya community during his visit to Trinidad and Tobago, emphasizing India's efforts to connect descendants with their roots. He underscored the significance of a new archival cooperation agreement between India and Trinidad and Tobago, which aims to help individuals trace their ancestry and reconnect with families in India. The agreement, along with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's directive for a dedicated Girmitya Studies Centre, reflects India's commitment to preserving this historical legacy. Mr. Jaishankar also noted the growing number of applications for Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) cards following Mr. Modi's announcement of extended eligibility.
