
Madurai Bench orders notice to nine convicts in Sattankulam custodial death case
Death sentences for custodial deaths are being challenged, raising concerns about justice.
The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court issued a notice to nine policemen sentenced to death for the custodial death of trader P. Jayaraj and his son J. Benicks in 2020. The court, hearing the referred trial, ordered the notice to the convicts: then Sattankulam inspector S. Sridhar; sub-inspectors P. Raghu Ganesh and K. Balakrishnan; head constables S. Murugan and A. Saamidurai; and constables M. Muthuraj, S. Chelladurai, X. Thomas Francis, and S. Veilumuthu.
