J&K Assembly admits Bill on reversing amendments made to Land Grants Act by L-G in 2022

The J&K Assembly on Wednesday (April 1, 2026) introduced a Bill aimed at reversing amendments to the Land Grants Act 1960 made by the Lieutenant Governor in 2022. The J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah stated that the government would consider the bill after deliberation. The bill, titled J&K Land Grants (Restoration and Protection) Bill, 2025, was introduced by National Conference (NC) legislator Tanvir Ali Sadiq and aims to restore rules from 1960, preventing outsiders from participating in auctions for lease land. Opposition members criticized the bill as favoring the wealthy at the expense of the poor. The Assembly also admitted another Bill, proposed by Sajad Shaheen, to establish a university campus at Banihal.
