Exclusion from rolls doesn’t repeal voting rights forever, says Supreme Court
The Supreme Court of India ruled that the rights of West Bengal voters purged from the electoral roll during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) cannot be permanently revoked. The court directed the Election Commission of India to provide complete access to reasons for exclusion and ensure fair adjudication processes through appellate tribunals presided over by former judges. The final date for filing nominations for the first phase of elections is April 6, with polling scheduled for April 23.
