Govt revs up consultations on early implementation of Women’s Reservation Act
The Narendra Modi government announced plans to amend the Women’s Reservation Act, 2023 to implement its provisions for the 2029 Lok Sabha election. The amendment will reserve one-third of seats in Parliament and State Assemblies for women based on the 2011 Census data. The Union Home Minister Amit Shah met with leaders from various Opposition parties including the Nationalist Congress Party, YSR Congress Party, All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen, and Shiv Sena (UBT) to discuss the proposed amendments. The government aims to introduce these amendments in Parliament during the ongoing Budget Session or a Special Session later this year.
