Sattankulam Jayaraj, Benicks custodial deaths case: All nine accused policemen convicted
Custodial deaths are a serious abuse of power and a failure of justice.
The First Additional District and Sessions Court in Madurai convicted all nine police personnel accused of the custodial torture death of P. Jayaraj and his son J. Benicks at the Sattankulam Police Station in 2020. Judge G. Muthukumaran found them guilty of murder and other offenses under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and will pronounce the sentence on March 30th. The judge also requested reports regarding the medical condition, last property statements, and salary certificates of the accused. The case shocked civil society and sparked widespread protests, leading to a transfer of the probe to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
