Eminent historian K.N. Panikkar passes away

K.N. Panikkar, a renowned historian and public intellectual, passed away at 89 in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala on Monday (March 9, 2026). He was widely respected for his rigorous historical writing and critique of communal interpretations of Indian history. Panikkar served as Professor of History at Jawaharlal Nehru University and held prominent roles in academia and institutions including the Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit and the Kerala State Higher Education Council. He also chaired the Kerala Council for Historical Research, which was preparing to celebrate his 90th birthday with special programs.
