Rahul Mamkootathil, an MLA, is facing heightened legal jeopardy after a 23-year-old non-resident Keralite woman accused him of rape. The magistrate recorded her sworn deposition under section 83 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), and the Special Investigation Team (SIT) is poised to move the court for the statement. The case began when the woman emailed her complaint to the president of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC), Sunny Joseph, MLA, leading to Mr. Mamkootathil's expulsion from the party. The State Police Crime Branch registered a rape case and filed a report in the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM), Thiruvananthapuram.
