Kerala Crime Branch questions Palakkad MLA Rahul Mamkootathil in rape case
An elected official is accused of rape and coerced pregnancy, raising concerns about abuse of power.
Rahul Mamkootathil, the Palakkad MLA, is being questioned by the Crime Branch at the State Police Club in Thiruvananthapuram. The questioning follows a rape and coerced pregnancy case registered against him in November 2025. The Kerala High Court granted Mr. Mamkootathil anticipatory bail but ordered him to cooperate with the investigation, surrender concealed phones, and share their passwords. Joby Thomas, an acquaintance of Mr. Mamkootathil, is also under scrutiny for allegedly supplying medicines causing miscarriage without a doctor’s prescription and coercing the survivor to consume them while on video call. The Crime Branch is investigating both men for obtaining sexual consent through deceitful means and threatening the survivor to terminate her pregnancy.
