Court restrains Congress leaders from making ‘defamatory statements’ against Assam CM

Gaurav Gogoi, Bhupesh Baghel, and Jitendra Singh, three Congress leaders, were restrained by a Guwahati court from making further defamatory statements against Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Assam Chief Minister. The order was issued after hearing the petitioner's counsel who argued that the allegations made by the Congress leaders are baseless and lack evidence. The court also ordered the defendants to appear before it on March 9, 2026. Devajit Saikia, Advocate General of Assam, stated that all the CM's assets have been publicly disclosed through various means including income tax filings, government records, and election affidavits. He further asserted that the allegations against the CM are politically motivated and aimed at gaining political advantage ahead of upcoming elections in the state.
