Why Governor K.K. Shah recommended dismissal of DMK government in Tamil Nadu during Emergency in 1976

M. Karunanidhi's Tamil Nadu government faced dismissal 50 years ago due to its reluctance to implement curbs on publications critical of the Internal Emergency imposed by Indira Gandhi. The Governor, K.K. Shah, cited the government's lack of cooperation with the Central government and the free circulation of anti-Emergency literature as reasons for recommending President's Rule. Shah also accused the DMK government of muzzling media outlets belonging to the Opposition and using state autonomy as a weapon to threaten secession. He recommended dissolving the State Legislative Assembly and appointing a high power commission to inquire into allegations against the government, which was ultimately done by the Sarkaria Commission.
