Rajasthan approves draft Bill to restrict property transfer in ‘disturbed areas’ to address communal tension

Urgent Civic Alert: power abuse

The bill potentially allows for discriminatory property restrictions based on communal tensions.

The Rajasthan Cabinet approved a Bill to designate certain areas as "disturbed" to address distress sales and tenant rights violations during communal violence. The proposed legislation, titled the Rajasthan Prohibition of Transfer of Immovable Property and Provisions for Protection of Tenants from Eviction from the Premises in Disturbed Areas Bill, 2026, will make offenses related to property transfers in such areas non-bailable and punishable with imprisonment ranging from three to five years and a fine. The Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma presided over the Cabinet meeting, which also saw decisions on semiconductor and aerospace policies aimed at positioning Rajasthan as a major manufacturing hub for high-technology industries.
