Gauri Lankesh murder case accused wins Jalna civic poll as Independent
An accused in a journalist's murder wins an election, raising concerns about justice and impunity.
Shrikant Pangarkar, an accused in the 2017 killing of journalist-activist Gauri Lankesh, won as a corporator from the Jalna Municipal Corporation in Maharashtra. He defeated his rival Raosaheb Dhoble of the BJP with 2,661 votes to Dhoble's 2,477 votes. Pangarkar, who had contested as an Independent candidate, was arrested under various anti-terrorism laws and granted bail in 2024. The election results are currently underway for 29 civic bodies across Maharashtra.
