Kerala MLA Rahul Mamkootathil sent to police custody for 3 days in rape case

Rahul Mamkootathil, the Palakkad MLA, was granted a three-day police custody by the Judicial First Class Magistrate Court in Thiruvalla. The Kerala Police’s Crime Branch requested the custody to recover evidence and investigate rape charges against him. Mr. Mamkootathil's defense counsel argued that his arrest was based on flimsy legal grounds, citing procedural flaws and a consensual relationship with the alleged victim. The prosecution sought custodial interrogation to recover digital devices and gather information about Mr. Mamkootathil’s interactions with the alleged victim from 2020 onwards. The Chief Minister's Office referred a second complaint alleging social media attacks against the alleged victim to State Police Chief Ravada Chandrasekhar.
