Rahul Mamkootathil, a former Kerala Youth Congress president, was expelled from the Congress party in December 2025 after multiple sexual misconduct allegations surfaced. He faced two separate rape cases and was arrested on January 10, 2026, for alleged offenses including rape, coercion to terminate a pregnancy, financial extortion, cheating, and illegal detention. He was subsequently remanded to judicial custody. The Kerala High Court granted interim protection from arrest until January 21, 2026, in the first sexual assault case.
