Months-long under-the-radar investigation paved the way for Mamkootathil’s arrest
Allegations of rape and coercion against an elected official warrant urgent attention.
Rahul Mamkootathil, an MLA in Kerala, was arrested on charges of rape, coerced medical termination of pregnancy, financial extortion, cheating, and other offenses. The arrest followed a pre-dawn raid at his hotel room by a Crime Branch team led by Assistant Inspector General of Police G. Poonguzhali, who has experience with sexual harassment cases in the film industry. The investigation was aided by a third "me-too" disclosure received by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s office, which helped circumvent an earlier protection order from the High Court.
