Months-long under-the-radar investigation paved the way for Mamkootathil’s arrest
Allegations of rape and abuse of power against an elected official warrant urgent attention.
Rahul Mamkootathil, an MLA in Kerala, was arrested on charges of rape, coerced medical termination of pregnancy, financial extortion, cheating, and other offenses. The arrest followed a pre-dawn raid by the Kerala Police Crime Branch that was prompted by a third "me-too" disclosure received by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan's office last year. Investigators obtained evidence including cell phone records, medical examination reports, and DNA test results, leading to the filing of an FIR and Mr. Mamkootathil's arrest. The investigation is being led by Assistant Inspector General of Police G. Poonguzhali, who has experience in handling cases involving sexual misconduct.
