Major setback for India's green cause: Kharge on Madhav Gadgil's demise

Congress leaders expressed condolences for the death of noted ecologist Madhav Gadgil, who passed away at 83 after a brief illness. Mallikarjun Kharge, the party chief, described Gadgil as a "foremost voice in ecological inquiry" and a major setback for India's green cause. Jairam Ramesh, a Congress general secretary and former Environment Minister, hailed Gadgil as a champion of traditional knowledge systems and a pioneer in building research capacities in India. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, another Congress leader, also expressed condolences. The UN recognized Gadgil with the Champions of the Earth award in 2024 for his work on the Western Ghats.
