Private HP university promoters declared fugitive economic offenders in 'fake' degree case
Large-scale fraud and abuse of power in education system is a serious concern.
Mandeep Rana and his mother, Ashoni Kanwar, promoters of the Himachal Pradesh-based private university Manav Bharti University, have been declared fugitive economic offenders (FEO) by a special PMLA court in Shimla. The duo is accused of selling "fake" degrees to students and allegedly obtained ₹387 crore through this illegal activity. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) registered a case against them in 2020, leading to the issuance of open-ended non-bailable warrants against them in November 2023 after they failed to comply with court orders. The agency will now move to confiscate their assets based on the FEO declaration.
