Fake degree case: Shimla court declares private varsity promoters fugitive economic offenders

Urgent Civic Alert: institutional failure

Abuse of power and potential large-scale harm to students through a fake degree scheme.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has declared two promoters of a Himachal Pradesh-based private university, Mandeep Rana and his mother Ashoni Kanwar, as Fugitive Economic Offenders (FEO) in a money-laundering case. The declaration was made under the Fugitive Economic Offenders Act (FEOA) of 2018 after an ED charge sheet was filed against Raj Kumar Rana, the main promoter and husband of Ashoni Kanwar, and 15 others in December 2022. Both Mandeep Rana and Ashoni Kanwar are currently based in Australia.
