
Mankal Vaidya elected unopposed as Deputy Speaker of Karnataka Legislative Assembly
On August 18, Mankal Vaidya of the Congress was elected unopposed as Deputy Speaker of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly by a unanimous vote. Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar proposed his name; Cooperation Minister Laxman Savadi seconded it. Despite opposition boycott due to alleged Congress high command recommendation, G. S. Patil, the Speaker, announced Vaidya’s election. Vaidya, who had been denied a Cabinet berth, was first elected in 2013 and has previously served as Minister for Ports and Fisheries. Leader of Opposition R. Ashok urged regular opportunities for Vaidya to preside over Assembly proceedings.
