Maharashtra Enforces Rule: Taxi and Auto Drivers Must Learn Marathi
On Tuesday, Maharashtra began enforcing a rule requiring auto and taxi drivers to learn Marathi. Drivers have up to four months to comply; those failing to do so will face licence suspension for three months and eventual cancellation. About 1.25 lakh drivers who completed the course will not be penalized. Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik emphasized strict enforcement, while Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde urged learning Marathi out of respect rather than fear.
