BJP boycotts, but Patil elected Karnataka Speaker amid celebrations
On Friday, Gurupadagouda Sanganagouda Patil, a four-time Congress MLA from Ron in Gadag district, was unanimously elected Karnataka Legislative Assembly Speaker. Proposed by Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar and seconded by Deputy CM G. Parameshwara, he is the 18th Speaker since 1972. The BJP boycotted the election over AICC communication of his name. Pro-tem Speaker T.B. Jayachandra declared him elected amid celebrations. Patil, from an influential political family, has held various roles including farmer and sportsperson. His post replaces U.T. Khader who resigned before joining the Council of Ministers on June 3.
